Patrons of the Arts are familiar with the term "photo-realism". Merrill French's husband has created a new term, "architectural realism", to describe his wife's style of painting. She calls herself "simply a landscape artist". Whichever term you choose, her art gives you the Alice in Wonderland feeling of having eaten the right side of the cookie and shrunk to the size of the painting. You can wander down the streets at your leisure, feel the breeze, and enjoy the scenery.
Merrill is a self-taught artist who comes by her interest in architecture naturally. It's in the genes - her grandfather was a Civil Engineer who had the final approving signature for the Empire State Building. They were always looking at buildings together when she was little.
Artist's Statement:
Remember the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" show? Sometimes between features Rocky would bop over to Bullwinkle and ask him what he was painting. Bullwinkle would answer "I just paint what I see". Well that's me...me and Bullwinkle, we just paint what we see.
